How is overtime calculated in Saudi Arabia?

Article 107 of the Saudi Labor Law says the employer must pay for each overtime hour an amount equal to the actual hourly wage plus 50% of the basic hourly wage.

  1. Actual hourly wage = (basic salary + fixed allowances) ÷ 30 ÷ daily working hours.
  2. Overtime premium = 50% × basic salary ÷ 30 ÷ daily working hours.
  3. Overtime hour = actual hourly wage + premium.

Working hours are capped at 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week, and 6 hours a day (36 a week) for Muslims during Ramadan (Article 98). Hours worked beyond that, and work on Eid and national holidays, count as overtime.

Example: basic SAR 6,000, allowances SAR 1,500, 8-hour days. The actual hourly wage is 7,500 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = SAR 31.25, and the premium is 50% × 6,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = SAR 12.50. Each overtime hour pays SAR 43.75, so 10 hours pay SAR 437.50.
