What is deducted from a salary in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia has no personal income tax. The only standard deduction from a private sector salary is the employee share of GOSI (General Organization for Social Insurance) contributions:
| Employee | Employee deduction | Calculated on |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi | 9% annuities + 0.75% SANED (unemployment insurance) | Basic salary + housing allowance, up to SAR 45,000 |
| Non-Saudi (expat) | Nothing | The employer pays 2% occupational hazards |
Transport and other allowances are not part of the contributory wage, so they are paid in full.
The new GOSI system (from July 2024)
A Saudi who starts their first civil job on or after 3 July 2024 joins the new system. The annuities rate starts at 9% and rises by 0.5% every July from 2025 until it reaches 11%. The calculator applies the rate that is in force today.
Example (Saudi): basic SAR 7,000, housing SAR 1,750 and transport SAR 700. GOSI is calculated on 8,750: annuities 9% = SAR 787.50 and SANED 0.75% = SAR 65.63. Net salary = 9,450 − 853.13 = SAR 8,596.87.
Example (expat): the same salary has no employee deduction, so the net salary is SAR 9,450.
